From its introduction in 1807 until late 1836, the Capped Bust half dollar carried a reverse inscription of 50 c. as well as edge lettering that read fifty cents or half a dollar. But a small number of 1836 half dollars and all 1837 half dollars featured a reeded edge and a reverse inscription of value reading 50 cents.
