When coin collectors lobbied for a design honoring peace just after WWI, the remarkable 90% silver Peace dollar was born. Approved on a quick timetable, barely a million of these first-year silver coins were minted during the final days of December 1921. But what really makes this beautiful dollar a key date is that it’s the first and only silver dollar struck in high relief (the design elements rise well above the coin’s surface)! The relief was lowered the following year because of problems in striking, making the high relief 1921 a one-year-only type that enhances Anthony de Francisci’s gorgeous depiction of Liberty and the eagle.
