1840 $5 Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company Obsolete Note

This obsolete uniface note depicts Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, at its top center. A Conestoga wagon getting its canvas cover fitted is at left and a rancher on horseback with his mixed herd is at right. The canal operated from 1831-1924 along the Potomac between Cumberland, MD, and Washington, D.C. Important to transportation and economic growth in the region, its primary cargo was coal shipped from the Allegany Mountains to the nation’s capital.
