Classic U.S. silver coins and the mystique of sunken treasure – they’re the dreams of collectors everywhere. Now, thanks to a fortunate purchase, I’m pleased to offer you a historic 1858-O Liberty Seated half dollar recovered from the wreck of the SS Republic.
In October of 1865, months after the Civil War ended, the steamer set sail from New York for New Orleans loaded with supplies, as well as a reported $400,000 in gold and silver coins. But a few days later, a fierce hurricane sank the ship – sending a vast treasure to the bottom of the Atlantic. Nearly 140 years later, in 2003, the wreck was discovered, and more than 51,000 U.S. gold and silver coins were recovered from the site – including the Seated Liberty half dollars offered here.
Before leaving New York for New Orleans on board the Republic, these classic coins originated from the New Orleans Mint – where they were struck in 90% silver. Now over 160 years old, each prized 1858-O half dollar offered here has been examined by our experts and certified by NGC with the conserved “Shipwreck Effect” designation. When our buyers learned that this group was available, they didn’t hesitate to acquire them for you. Don’t miss this opportunity to add a true piece of history to your collection – order right away.
