1863 $1 State of Georgia Note

Here’s a Southern States note we don’t often come across – 1863 State of Georgia $1 Notes. Our buyers just purchased this nice group in collector-preferred, New Unused condition! Issued January 1, 1863 at Milledgeville, the Georgia state capital during the Civil War, these uniface notes feature signatures for J.S. Beall, Comptroller General and R.M Cartellaw, Treasurer.

The engraver was credited as Howell Cobb, Provisional Confederate Congress president who, before the Civil War, was treasury secretary under President James Buchanan. Replicating the same central vignette found on early 1862 $100 Confederate Notes, this $1 State of Georgia issue shows a coal-fired steam locomotive pulling passenger cars as travelers wait to board. A sidewinder paddlewheeler is seen in the background. Below the motif, the note indicates the state of Georgia, which had seceded in 1861, “will pay the bearer one dollar at the Treasury in Confederate Treasury Notes, when presented in sums of Five Dollars, and upwards.”
