In 1864, two different first-year 2¢ varieties were created: the Small and Large Motto. This attractive, brown coin is the important Large Motto variety, mate to the earlier Small Motto. According to Walter Breen in his , the Large Motto was created when new dies, with the larger lettering for the motto, were put into use.
