National Bank Notes were issued from 1863-1935 by private banks federally chartered as "national banks." Secured by U.S. bonds purchased by the banks, these notes feature the U.S. Treasury Seal and common designs, but they bear the name and charter number of the bank, as well as signatures of the bank's officials. This Series 1882 "brown back" $5 note prominently displays the bank's charter number on the brown reverse. The face features a portrait of President James Garfield, brown Treasury seal, and Tillman-Morgan Treasury signatures.
