The Attalid Kingdom in Asia Minor needed new currency after its hard-fought liberation from the Seleucids. Around 190 B.C., it began to issue these Cistophoric Silver Tetradrachms. On the obverse, they were struck with the Cista Mystica, a basket housing sacred snakes used during initiation ceremonies into the cult of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and festivals (Bacchus in later Roman culture). The reverse features snakes coiled around a bow case. These ancient silver coins are still remarkably attractive with sharp details. We expect this fascinating coin to sell out – so order quickly!
