Uncertainty during the Civil War led to widespread hoarding of coins, and it became impossible to make change. So Congress authorized small-size (67 mm wide x 48 mm high) paper currency notes in denominations of 3, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents - which were released between 1862-1876. Originally only redeemable in stamps, due to the coin shortage caused by the war, Congress in 1875-1876 finally allowed them to be redeemed in coins. This 5¢ fractional currency note of 1862-1869 is a precious souvenir of the Civil War era! Designs may vary.
