The American Silver Eagle Design

The magnificent American Eagle silver dollar features the cherished and highly acclaimed "Liberty Walking" design originally used on 1916-1947 U.S. half dollars. In the design created by renowned sculptor A.A. Weinman, Liberty strides toward the dawn of a new day, carrying branches of laurel and oak – symbolic of civil and military might (a message of national confidence and hope, as WWI raged in Europe when Liberty Walking half dollars debuted in 1916).

The reverse side features the Heraldic Eagle behind a shield – designed by John Mercanti, former chief engraver of the U.S. Mint. Like the Great Seal of the United States, the eagle grasps an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left talon, symbolizing desire for peace but readiness to defend itself. Above the eagle are 13 stars representing the original Thirteen Colonies, and reverse inscriptions include a statement of content – 1 oz. fine silver.
