Constantine VII was just 6 when his father, Leo the Wise, died. Since the empire was run by several regents and co-emperors at the time of Leo's death, Constantine did not rule by himself until he was 40. During his life, Constantine wrote a guide to court ceremonies titled The Book of Ceremonies. Upon his in 959, Constantine's son Romanus II became emperor.
