Silver Pandas vs. Gold Pandas
Though both series feature the beloved giant panda in a new reverse design each year, silver Pandas and gold Pandas have some distinct differences beyond their colors and compositions.
Introduced in 1983, popular 10 Yuan silver Panda coins are larger than a traditional U.S. silver dollar and beautifully accented by a selectively frosted finish. Silver Pandas were originally minted in 27 grams of 90% silver. However, to better match international standards, coins dated 1987-2015 were struck in 1 troy oz. (31.1 grams) of 99.9% pure silver. The weight was changed yet again in 2016, and today silver Pandas are struck in 30 grams of 99.9% silver.
Gold Panda coins were introduced in 1982, a year before silver Pandas. And like their silver counterparts, 99.9% pure gold Pandas have seen many changes. Originally struck as 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz. and 1 oz. coins, today gold Pandas coins are minted in five denominations, ranging from 10 Yuan (1 gram) to 500 Yuan (30 grams).
