The Indian Head Penny's Design

Minted from 1859 through 1909, Indian pennies have witnessed some of the most dramatic historical changes in American history – the discoveries of rich western gold and silver deposits... the completion of the transcontinental railroad... the industrial development of the country's greatest cities... the advent of the automobile and airplane... and the dawn of the 20th century. The coins were minted in copper-nickel from 1859-1864. However, in 1864 their composition was changed to bronze.

The obverse design on the Indian Head penny depicts Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress and a band inscribed liberty, not an actual Native American chief. The coin's reverse features a wreath of laurel leaves encircling the inscription one cent. This was changed in 1860 to a wider wreath of oak leaves surrounding the denomination, with a Union Shield above.
