More About the Peace Dollar
The aptly named Peace dollar continues to fascinate collectors to this day. Struck by the Philadelphia Mint in December 1921 and officially released in January 1922, the first Peace dollars were minted in high relief. However, due to production issues, the U.S. Mint lowered the relief the following year. The series was paused from 1929 to 1933, but production resumed in 1934. The final 90% silver Peace dollars were struck in 1935, after which no dollar coins were minted until the Eisenhower dollar debuted 36 years later in 1971.
In 2021, the U.S. Mint honored the series' 100th anniversary by releasing new Peace silver dollars. Unlike the classic 90% silver issues, the new 2021 Peace dollars were struck in 99.9% pure silver.
The Peace Dollar's Design & More
The U.S. Mint has had many émigré designers throughout its existence. But none captured hearts quite like medalist and newlywed Anthony de Francisci, who modeled his Peace dollar's portrait of Liberty after his wife.
The Peace dollar also carries significance in the commissioning ceremonies of each branch of the U.S. armed services, a revered tradition dating back to the 19th century.
